Many of us have ancestors who immigrated to this land to help shape and build our great nation, and local immigrants today play a vital role in our economy.
The role of establishing, regulating and enforcing laws related to immigration is, and has always been, the responsibility of the federal government. Local law enforcement does not have the training nor the experience to investigate immigration violations, and doing so would be contrary to ideals we warmly embrace.
As Sheriff, I will resist and oppose any efforts to involve the Sheriff’s Office in the field-level enforcement of immigration laws. We will carry out our duties fairly, impartially, and without consideration of the condition of our residents’ immigration status.
I am, however, opposed to any measure that limits our ability to communicate with our federal law enforcement partners. I believe these types of limitations would take away tools that help us protect our community and keep its residents safe. I will actively monitor the legislature for any effort that jeopardizes public safety and use my position and influence to prevent passage of any such legislation.
